Joe Baker’s Punch Out – Resident Evil VII: End of Zoe DLC

Resident Evil VII was one of my top games of 2017. You love it too, right? Of course you do, it’s fantastic! After the tease at the end of the game, we were all eagerly awaiting the “Not a Hero” DLC because it promised to put Chris Redfield into the RE7 setting. That’s cool, and after playing it I can say I thought it was alright. But did you play the unexpected “End of Zoe” DLC? If you haven’t, then go do it. Now. Seriously, go play it, then come tell me all about it on Twitter or something.

For those of you who are familiar: JOE BAKER!!! Right!? Man, this guy is as grizzled and hardcore as it gets. It was super fun to play as an old man who punches every monster he sees. Don’t get me wrong here, I love the survival feeling of the main game. I know that some people may think the approach taken on this DLC is a step back, but I thoroughly enjoy it being balanced with a bit of batshit crazy like we got in “End of Zoe.” It’s not perfect, but it was a blast to play.
Enough gushing for now.
When I got to the first real fight with the “Swamp Man” in the boat, I was so impressed with the way that they straight up put you into a boxing match. The fighting and movement mechanics feel solid, allowing for combo attacks and tough dodges requiring you to read your opponent and predict their attack. The monster in front of you also has attitude, apparent in its body language and the way it will actually taunt you to attack. With all these surprising new elements to the game, I couldn’t help but think: I want this to be its own game.
Think about how cool it would be to have a fully designed first-person fighting game where you face off against various monsters and horrible mutations. Joe Baker meets Punch-Out! The possibilities for playable characters and opponents, the limitless potential for crossover with other horror properties and mythologies, the canvas for original creature designs, and even the chance for customization of your own heroes and monsters.
It’s not too crazy of an idea to work. Seriously, Marvel Vs Capcom is a beloved and long-standing crossover fighting game series. Come on guys, let’s go with Monsters Vs Capcom!
